Burnette Elementary School

One of the greatest challenges facing the CDH design team in creating a master plan for Burnette Elementary School was the steep topography of the location. Other challenges included state waterways, an existing pond, and an extensively planned expansion of the street frontage by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Designers for CDH Partners adapted the master plan from a prototype school to provide standard classrooms, core program spaces, and layout, while offering an economically approach to the site constraints. Entry features at the front and rear of the structure address key points of access and security for students and visitors while maintaining administrative control of the campus.

The building was designed off a split-level plan and is accessed from upper and lower level parking lots and drop-off areas. Design elements incorporated in the facility include brick, concrete, and durable finishes. Neutral colors punctuated by a bright primary color palette in classroom areas create a sense of structure and spaciousness. A state-of-the-art media library, science labs, and dining room were included in the plan. Large windows at the entrance of the facility allow natural light to fill the front hallway. An external contemporary canopy greets parents and students along the park entry.

Underground detention and retaining walls redefined the site and maintain easements and site requirements. Playfields are located on the rear of the property and are connected to the main campus by a bridge.
