Flat Rock Elementary

DeKalb County Schools have been so satisfied with this school that it has become a prototype for their future elementary schools in their county. The CDH Partners design team utilized an innovative storm drain solution to effectively deal with runoff and minimize the impact on a nearby flood plain. The intelligently designed building integrates EIFS, brick and glass as exterior surfaces. With nearly 200 percent more glazing than typical classrooms, the use of natural light reduces operational expenditures. Use of a quartz vinyl tile offers lower maintenance in the high traffic areas.

Administration offices are located along the main corridor near the entry to the school. Security concerns were addressed through the use of strategically positioned cameras, a wall of windows along the corridor, and the construction of a secure courtyard for the Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade classes. Because the school was constructed in one phase, all third, fourth, and fifth grade classes were located on the second level minimizing the vertical circulation code restrictions for younger children.
