Winterville Elementary School
The existing Winterville Elementary School facility was constructed over a thirty-five year period. Budget constraints required designers for CDH Partners to keep a wing constructed in 1990 and a four-pod classroom addition that was built in 1999 intact. This area contains the school’s media center, a gymnasium, and classrooms.
Designers reconnected these two structures by adding a glass hall connector. This created an “H” shaped design that re-oriented the entrance to the school’s media center. Large windows located along exterior hallways and throughout the facility provide an abundance of natural light while maintaining visual connections to the campus.
Design elements incorporate brick and durable finishes. Natural colors punctuated by a bright color palette create a sense of structure, warmth, and spaciousness. An open-air courtyard with step seating offers students a place to gather.
A contemporary canopy is positioned along a park entry and a tower-feature serve as landmark details for the Winterville campus. Public spaces are also located along the front of the facility. The rear wing connects with the new construction and carves out an interior space that includes a dining room that contains a stage and music room.
