Alps Road Elementary School
This new elementary school for the Clarke County School District serves a student population of 635 students. The building is comprised of forty instructional units. Clerestory lighting and large expanses of window wall glazing allow natural lighting into most areas of the facility. The new structure replaces an existing school, that was required to remain functional until the new school was completed. Many of the design issues revolved around the successful phasing of this consideration.
Upon completion of the new school, the old building was demolished, preserving selective portions of the existing concrete slab to become Outdoor hard surface play areas. The city of Athens partcipated in the design of the play area, so that the public would have use of the area after regular school hours.
