CDH Partners worked with the leadership of Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia to expand their campus to address growing youth ministry needs by providing a safe and inviting environment that promotes fellowship, and spiritual growth opportunities.
The architectural features of the “Student Ministries Building” includes an open central mall with exposed structure, and a rich palette of colors that reinforces a natural aesthetic. This unique facility provides two spaces for assembly. One for the Middle School ministry with seating for 500 when operable walls creating classroom spaces are stacked and stored. The second, for the High School ministry, will accommodate 300.
Each with state of the art audio, video and theatrical lighting technology.The central mall space provides small group meeting cubes and stalls in an open environment. A cafe’ anchors the west end of the mall. An interior dining area is provided as well as two covered exterior dining areas.
The Atlanta Jewish Academy selected CDH Partners to design a new building and renovation of the existing space on campus. This multi-phase plan includes classroom and laboratory instruction space, faculty areas, a beit midrash and a new gymnasium. A third level addition to the high school was also masterplanned within the project’s scope.
The nearly 20,000 sf multi-purpose building provides many different environments for use. There are classroom and laboratory combination spaces, which allow instruction on physics, biology and chemistry. The Academy faculty have new areas in which to interact with students outside the instructional space and prepare their teaching. The beit midrash has a etzel hayim for the sefer torah, a prescribed divider and storage for kippas and shawls. Our continuous communication with the client was vital to this project. The coordination by all parties involved provided beautiful new instructional and gathering space for the Academy.
Vinings is the third generation Health Park for WellStar and follows the innovative module that was developed by CDH for Acworth and refined at East Cobb. These superior facilities include multi-specialty care across all physician practices, on-site imaging and lab services, and an ambulatory surgery center. Mutual to each building is an iconic 2-story atrium, grand stair, and monumental water feature. While all have finish palettes consistent with WellStar’s brand, each site has its own accent finishes and special detailing that make it unique to its community. Vinings further refines this aesthetic with light wood tones and modern clean lines, creating the perfect setting for the highest quality care.
Shepherd Pathways, a program of the Shepherd Center, is a dedicated outpatient and residential rehabilitation program for recovery from brain injuries. The facility is located in Decatur and previously exists as two buildings with administration, rehabilitation gym and equipment, and patient rooms supported by a collaborative treatment team. CDH Partners joined the Shepherd Pathways families and staff to upgrade the facility to better support the entire patient, family, and staff experience.
Renovations included enhanced finishes throughout the 33,510 sf existing facility, a new gym, reorganized central administration area, and upgraded family lounges and dining amenities. Additionally, a new monumental lobby has been designed to unify the contemporary activity building with the traditional residential portion of the campus. The welcoming lobby features a large canopy for improved patient drop-off as well as a dedicated on-site registration area for new patients.
Overall, the renovations serve to enhance the Shepherd mission through providing a space where patients, families, and staff can focus on recovery in a healing, supportive environment.
Bethany Assisted Living recognizes a need for high quality long term care for seniors. Using their nearly century long history to establish a blueprint of service, Bethany leadership set about conceiving a plan for improving healthcare for the aged and infirmed. The process began with the gift and acquisition of a parcel of land called the Neville Farm, the largest piece of undeveloped property in Statesboro, GA.
Bethany engaged CDH Partners to bring their dream of creating a model that serves as the flagship facility to fruition. The Lodge at Bethany provides housing and other amenities for those who need traditional senior care or memory care. The 48-unit facility offers residents the opportunity to live a full and robust lifestyle with social engagement within the relaxed atmosphere of a small community. Family members and friends can be entertained either in an indoor private setting or the outdoor patio. Exercise options include walks along the interior courtyards, outdoor living spaces and the wellness/therapy center. The Lodge also offers special services of a spa/salon, a theater and cyber café located on the grounds of the complex.
The Lodge also allows Bethany to continue the nationally recognized superior level of service and care to seniors. The residence units’ size and close proximity to attendant stations permits quick response when help is needed. CDH Partners used the latest architectural innovations to design a facility that also accommodates residents who require extra assistance throughout the campus.
The Lodge at Bethany’s staff welcomed the first residents on January 4, 2016. The State of Georgia awarded the Assisted Living Community status to the Lodge on the same day, becoming the first to receive the honor in Statesboro. Everyone at CDH Partners congratulates the Lodge for this status and look forward to continuing our partnership as Bethany looks to the future.
CDH designed the chapel at St. John Neumann for perpetual adoration. The chapel has its own sacristy. Like the main church, this chapel was designed to accommodate those, who are physically challenged. In fact, handicap access and ease of entry and usage drove the design decisions. It is used both for daily mass and exposition of the Eucharist and seats up to 100 people. It can be locked off from the rest of the church but still have access to a handicap toilet.
Natural finishes of rich wood and stone along with beautifully appointed stain glass create a sense of warmth, quiet worship, and welcome. Designers had the rare opportunity to use an existing exterior granite wall within the newly design space. This was done to create an illusion that the chapel was built first, which was actually built later. On the outside, the two worship facilities are connected by a striking and open 80 by 120-foot plaza, which serves as a method of easy access for those in wheel chairs and walkers. Internally, these two building are connected by a light-filled hallway leading from narthex to narthex. Congregants can move seamlessly from the chapel to the sanctuary fulfilling the church’s goal to provide worship spaces where everyone feels welcomed.
The church leadership asked the CDH team to create places designed in the chapel space for statuaries of Mary and Joseph. A large niche in the chapel narthex was created for a statue of Saint John Neumann. This niche is on axis with the corridor leading into the main narthex and is visible from there. Designers used the same design vocabulary from the main church, soffits and sconces but modified them to the scale of this smaller space.
CDH designed Our Lady of the Assumption, which was dedicated in 2005. That architectural design included a wall that would be a columbarium containing 108 units. At the time, columbariums on Parish grounds were not permitted by the Archbishop. When this rule changed, the parish moved forward to complete their original desire for a columbarium. The master plan was designed to include 400 units, which would cover the cost of construction. CDH completed drawings for permit and the construction was completed. The columbarium was dedicated last in the fall of 2015.
The original wall had three sections designed to hold 36 12x12x12 units. CDH designed four new walls, which added eight sections each of 36 units to bring the total unit count to 396.
Designers matched the brick and cast stone used on the church and original wall and extended the engraved brick pavers to the base of all of the walls. The height of the new walls was determined by the local jurisdiction at eight feet. Originally designed at ten feet to match the existing wall, architects altered the cast stone shape and brick coursing on the new walls to comply. Each unit will hold up to two regular sized burial urns so couples can be buried together in the same unit.
First Baptist Toccoa is a very active community church with a growing student population. Even though this church is located in a rural area in northeast Georgia, it is known for its progressive building program. Over the years, the church has expanded to meet the needs of a growing congregation.
Two years ago, the church’s leadership team realized many of its young families were leaving the church in search of broader and more progressive form of worship. This is when they contacted CDH Partners and asked for assistance in retaining their current student population and expanding it to attract others from the surrounding communities.
Designers created a building that goes beyond meeting the needs of the church’s teens. While the focus of the new addition is primarily focused on students and teens, this new 14,500 square foot space accommodates a broad range of age groups and includes a contemporary multipurpose space that is used for worship, recreation, and church fellowships. The area is equipped with a state-of-the-art stage and elevated sound booth.
The facility was designed with community in mind and offers meeting and gathering spaces. The cafe with stained concrete floors serve as a perfect location for friends to meet and talk. An enclosed glass corridor serves as a welcoming transition from a traditional church environment to this newly design contemporary space.
Heritage Oaks of Englewood is a new signature assisted living and memory care located in Charlotte County, Florida. This new 118 unit assisted living community includes a 32 unit memory care neighborhood and is in close proximity to world-class healthcare, cultural venues, fine shopping and dining.
Heritage Oaks is a 95,611 square foot, one-of-a-kind community offering a luxurious lifestyle with concierge services, chef-prepared meals, housekeeping and more, without a large investment or long-term commitment. A variety of floor plans feature spacious one-bedroom and one-bath plans including deluxe two-bedroom and two-bath units.
For the design of Heritage Oaks, the interior spaces are configured for openness that promotes social interaction. Community spaces are designed to serve as the residents’ family room increasing social interaction among residents. The innovative design gives residents’ indoor and outdoor spaces for meeting, entertaining, arts and crafts, wellness, dining, developing computing skills and recreation.
Heritages Oaks provides residents with comfort, security, and peace of mind. All spaces are designed with rich, durable material. LED Lighting is enhanced to create a warm, friendly, and sustainable environment. Healthy mental stimulation through environmental design along with easy way finding for residents, contribute to a healthy and meaningful lifestyle for the residents, visitors, and staff.
Heritage Oaks sits on over 10 acres of a planned community, providing more than 60 parking spaces to support the mobility of the residents. Having access to nature and the outdoors has long been considered therapeutic for elderly residents. Research is beginning to confirm that spending time outdoors has many important health benefits even increase longevity.
The exterior landscape design includes looped walking paths and spaces that support continuous footsteps, plenty of shade to protect residents from overexposure, and comfortable seating which provides areas of rest.
The Holbrook of Acworth is scheduled to open in Spring 2017. CDH was asked to create an independent residential facility where residents would feel at home in a safe environment. They also created a facility where seniors can thrive and stay active for much longer. The focus on this facility is on independent living, community engagement, and connectivity in a resort-like environment.
This 241,105 square foot independent living community contains 181 units and offers eight floor plans. The five-story, shingle style facility will feature a wellness center, indoor saltwater pool, spa, salon, movie theater, full-service restaurant, a contemporary bistro, secured underground parking, and outdoor amenities including a fireplace and a lawn-side cabana for year-round enjoyment.
The design for the Holbrook of Acworth is timeless. The architectural shingle style is characterized by a free-flowing, open plan that easily transitions between interior and exterior spaces. Open porches contribute to the general picturesque and craftsmen feel of the structure. The irregular elevation of the building conveys a feeling of openness and residential living. Natural stone and warm colors on the exterior create a sense of welcome, comfort, and a homelike atmosphere.
The Holbrook also offers the amenities of a luxury resort but with the comforts of home including 24-hour secured grounds, personalized concierge, a business center, three dining venues, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, formal gardens and pristine nature trails, hair salons, library, sundries shoppe, bistro, billiards and game room, and a hobby center.
CDH Partners was asked by developers, Solomon Development Services, to design a senior living environment that is safe and highlights a community lifestyle while maintaining the comforts of home. This latest Trinity Life facility is a part of the Dogwood Forest Senior Living Communities. It will be completed in spring 2017.
The design of Dogwood Forest of Grayson is focused on resident engagement and connectivity in a resort-like environment. The 99-unit, 102,647 square foot, two-story, shingle style community features a wellness center, spa, salon, movie theater, full-service restaurant and bar, a contemporary bistro, and outdoor amenities, including a fireplace for year-round enjoyment.
Open porches and the irregular roofline contribute to the general picturesque or rustic effect. The irregular elevation of the building conveys a feeling of openness where natural materials were used on the exterior to create a sense of place in the surrounding community.
Dogwood Forest of Grayson caters to seniors ranging from those who are completely independent to those who need more care. There will be two separate and distinct neighborhoods within the community—one for 74 residents of traditional assisted living and an adjacent 25-resident memory care community dedicated to serving seniors with varying levels of dementia. When creating this facility, designers used a holistic approach to health and wellness, which included the addition of a variety of amenities—a fitness center, yoga-cardio room, flexible activity room, and treatment massage rooms.
Building committee members for the historical Friendship Baptist Church selected CDH Partners to design a completely new church campus. Plans call for this new campus to be completed in April 2017, which will be the church’s 155th anniversary. Friendship is one of the oldest African-American churches in the city of Atlanta.
The new 44,000 square foot church will contain state-of-the-art technology and a sanctuary that seats 500. The design for the Fellowship Hall will be flexible and contain a stage and room for over 450 people, while a smaller chapel will seat 200. The church will also contain educational and choir rehearsal space.
Friendship Baptist was displaced when the Atlanta Falcons began to acquire property for a new stadium. It was established in 1862 and is Atlanta’s first African American Baptist congregation. In the beginning, church services were held in a donated railroad boxcar given to Friendship by a church in Ohio. It was used for worship services on Sunday and as a classroom by youth during the week.
Both Spelman and Morris Brown Colleges began in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church. These schools later became a part of Atlanta University. The church is also the “Mother” church to nine other African American Baptist congregations.
Many elements of the historical Friendship Church building have been preserved and will be incorporated into the new building. Stained glass windows will be reused along with the church’s original bell and pipe organ.

CDH designed a new sanctuary and education building for Roopville Road Baptist Church. This building contains 54,000 square feet and provides much needed space for future growth. The exterior is stucco accented with natural stone and wood creating a warm and welcoming environment. Stone columns and a well lit cupola designate the covered entry.
Large windows provide an abundance of natural light, which flows throughout the lobby space. Flooring consists of stained concrete and carpet. The sanctuary is a state-of-the-art facility containing choir space, a large stage, stadium seating, audio and video booths and theatrical lighting. The main worship center also contains a music rehearsal suite, preschool education wing, and a cafe.
Several gathering spaces were added as places to connect with friends. The building includes an administrative wing and an education wing for adults, children, and youth.
The children’s area is a safe, fun environment that contains a theater with a stage. The preschool area incorporates a safe check in desk, bright colors, and spacious rooms and has a fire house theme.
The facility utilizes Lean construction design—an improvement technique that focuses on maximizing utilization of resources and minimizing waste. As a rapidly growing healthcare provider, Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) realized the need to locate many system administrative support functions under one roof.NGHS uses this approach to increase the quality of patient care and employee satisfaction. This administrative site is centrally located and remotely supported multiple hospital and healthcare campuses.
CDH architects developed a plan for the interior and exterior renovation of the 109,000 square foot adaptive re-use project. What was once a vacant Sam’s Club, has been transformed into a vibrant office facility. A near-term projection of 480 employees from 20 departments will move into this open plan space. Designers worked with administrators and employees from every department to create a flexible, adaptable space that meets the system future work flow goals.
Departmental collaboration is a primary focus of the new design, which includes collaborative support spaces, multi-functional training and meeting rooms, a fitness center, and work café. This new office space also utilizes shared conference rooms and open collaborative spaces throughout the building.
A natural color palette and inviting finishes complements the standardized flexible systems furniture. As departments grow and expand, the plan will adapt to the changing needs. The lighting will utilize 58 existing skylights, daylight harvesting, and innovative lighting fixtures to create a comfortable and environmentally conscious design.
This highly collaborative and contemporary office setting focuses on employee comfort and satisfaction. Support nourishment stations and the opportunity to work in a variety of postures and groups will motivate employees to “love” their new office.
Northeast Georgia Medical Center
The design for WellStar East Cobb offers a evidence-based design system that is a combination of out-patient services enhanced with health and wellness opportunities. One of the challenges designers faced was to be sensitive to the needs and wishes of the surrounding community. As a leading provider of healthcare services in the Metro-Atlanta area, WellStar Health System worked with CDH Partners to provide an innovative delivery to healthcare for area residents. The result was a state-of-the-art health park that services area residents in a highly populated residential area. Designers master planned the site and facility, which offers a results-based system that combines enhanced outpatient services with health and wellness opportunities.
At East Cobb, the design team of CDH Partners began by creating a master plan for the Health Park site. The vision for this park and others like it bring the healthcare services closer to the communities which they serve. Each park is an integral part of the community and is utilized for medical services and also fitness and health education.
The site for the East Cobb Health Park is surrounded by a residential neighborhood and a church. The Health Park includes space for urgent care, imaging services, medical offices, childcare, and retail. A terraced parking deck is nested into a hillside offering easy access to the three story structure. The CDH design team preserved much of the wooded landscape leaving it natural and undisturbed. Walking trails along a stream are open to the public. A scenic drive connects to the Wellness Center and Rehab facility. Additional accessible parking is included in future planning and will service the needs of a growing visitor population.
The scope of this health park was to design a “one stop” healthcare facility. Utilizing an integrated team approach, a team consisting of architects, interior designers, contractor, end users, evidence-base design experts, and medical planners came together to work on this state-of-the-art 190,000 square foot health park high performance building.
Designers created a warm and inviting environment that assists in patient healing and wellbeing. This facility contains an ambulatory surgery center as well as clinical outpatient services for diagnostic imaging and lab, urgent care, primary care and specialty outpatient services such as pulmonary and physical rehabilitation. It also contains employee fitness, community education, and conference room space.
Architects and designers also focused on creating an intrinsic design that guides visitors through the facility using visible points of connection. Their goal was to design a building that reduces patient stress for a better experience and outcome. Exam rooms have custom benches that provide comfort for family members and function as storage beneath. Physician offices are combined with medical assistant offices for space efficiency. Furniture and finishes were selected for durability, safety, ease of maintenance, and comfort.
Phase two of the master plan for Gardendale First Baptist Church joins the church campus to a highly charged worship and educational space for preschool children and elementary students. This area is called Kidz Kingdom. After a worship facility was built, leadership for Gardendale quickly realized that the next priority was to move its children and youth ministries to the new location.
The CDH design team chose two themes for Kidz Kingdom both incorporate bold and happy colors, which also act as wayfinding elements for children and parents. (Please see the video below.) They are also used to engage and to motivate each age group. The first floor contains a lobby designed with a playground theme and includes a durable play set behind a tree house design. Additional classroom spaces are designed with lots of color creating an inviting space for children and youth.
On the lower level, the entrance to the 500-seat auditorium has the look and feel of a real motion picture theater with a marque and lighting. This space contains a large stage with state-of-the-art audio, video, and lighting. This theater provides a place for children to be “kidz!” They can sing, jump around, worship, watch dramas, and interact with teachers and other children. Each Sunday, volunteers pop popcorn in a large movie theater popcorn machine.
The design also included the construction of a nursery, pre-school, and elementary educational classrooms. A spacious lobby doubles as a gathering and fellowship space for children and their families. Playgrounds and well-positioned parking complete the campus. The parent drop off area for the nursery and the check-in area is on the main level and has secure access doors. The entire facility is secure and safe. Cameras are placed in strategic locations so children are monitored at all times.
CDH Partners was asked to provide a plan for the Village Center which is on the Presbyterian Village Assisted Living Campus. This facility is a 18,317 square foot new multi-function facility consisting of a wellness center that includes fitness areas, medical administrative offices, and examination rooms.
The main level contains a spacious gathering area with comfortable seating and a fireplace. multi-purpose room, library, and an arts and crafts room. The facility also contains a cafe, convenience shop, game room, hair salon and administrative offices. The lower level consists of exercise and fitness rooms, locker rooms, and an indoor lap pool and whirlpool.
CDH Partners is working with Trinity Lifestyles Management, a family owned leader in the senior living community, to design a series of assisted living and memory care communities in the Southeast. Due to the number of desired communities, CDH is developing a prototype based on Trinity’s extensive experience. The prototype contains both essential senior living features and luxury enhancements.
In addition to providing two separate neighborhoods for assisted living and memory care, the prototype is designed for future-proofing. Not only does it meet the requirements of assisted living codes and regulations, it can also be easily converted into skilled nursing should the need arise in the community. The prototype developed for Trinity Lifestye Management features studio, one and convertible two bedroom apartments. All units are ADA compliant and offer individual bathrooms and spacious storage for resident use.
Community features include outdoor gardens with water features, a family dining room, bistro, expansive wellness area, multi-purpose activity rooms, salon, theater, and intimate social life group spaces throughout the building. The memory care neighborhood includes a sunroom, outdoor garden with a water feature, and life skill stations that promote independence and activity. Overall, the entire community is designed in keeping with the Trinity philosophy to inspire the mind, body, and spirit.
